Going to give Arcsoft's Media Converter a try next.

Looks to be a good package for converting to portable devices or smaller file/quality for uploading to YouTube etc. Also not sure if it will preserve aspect ratios outside the two options it gives of 4:3 and 16:9.

The VOB is 720x576 but nearest option it allows is 720x480. Problem with MediaEspresso is there doesn't seem to be the same level of control over the output, so can't get it just do a conversion and preserve the same resolution. It too took under 5 mins to convert the same 1h 38m VOB movie, and around ~30% cpu usage, so looks like Quick Sync is phenominally fast without hogging the cpu.

Just need to find the right software for the job. I did read that review on AnandTech before buying and it was partly resposible for me choosing a cpu capable of utilising Quick Sync. I dont know if they do check out DivX Plus and their H.264 encoder it might support QuickSync and if it did would likely be the best quality one as DivX use & also now own the MainConcept H.264 encoder which is second best behind x264 and MainConcept does work with QuickSync but whether DivX have enabled it is another matter. I've used Cyberlinks MediaExpresso with GPU encoders and it's fast but the quality is not good, maybe there isn't the same hit with QuickSync as it's an actual hardware encoder and just just butchering quality for speed. If you want a speed boot try those, most of the H.264 encoders are generally inferior to x264 anyway. X264 is optimized for quality and most presets in encoders stick with that, but you can do x264 turbo encoding by using speed presets at a trade off in quality (same as what GPU encoders do) however most x264 encoders do not expose such presets, meGUI does but that's a complicated app, Staxrip has x264 Film Fast preset under 2-pass mode. X264 is a codec, H.264 is the format and Intel's Quicksync uses some other implementation of H.264 as it is a hardware accelerated encoder and you have to tie into Intel's SDK in order to use QuickSync. Is there any other software I should check out, or maybe just stick to Handbrake for the moment? Looking for recommendations of software worth trying as at the moment it seems only the following three commercial packages support Intel Quick Sync, and I don't want to waste lots of time with testing them if anyone's already been through it and can give feedback on what they've found best. So before I spend time trying to get DVDFab working adequately I was wondering if anyone else has an Intel Sandy Bridge PC and is successfully using Quick Sync for decent quality fast video conversion into h.264/x.264?

Apparently it's possible to turn off b-frames to fix the corruption problem but not yet delved into how to do that, looks to be a profile change and possibly messing around with XML. However on playback there is corruption which looking on the DVDFab forum appears to be due to b-frames.

I've downloaded the trial version of DVDFab to try out the Quick Sync encoding as several reviews show Quick Sync to be a lot quicker than pure software/CPU.Ĭonverting the same VOB using DVDFab and a bitrate of 1500 with Quick Sync enabled it averaged 430FPS and took just over 5 minutes! Also only used ~50% cpu.

It uses 100% cpu at below normal priority so I can still surf while it's encoding. On my new PC using Handbrake (with default High Profile settings of RF:20) averages just under 100FPS, taking around 30 minutes to convert a VOB file. Up until now I've been using Handbrake to convert my ripped DVDs to h.264 to save space on my NAS. Just upgraded my PC to a Sandy Bridge i5 2500k which has the Intel HD Graphics 3000 engine allowing use of Quick Sync for fast video encoding/conversion.
